Creatures and Species of Lorin

Born at the dawn of time dragons were created to protect the worlds of the Creator. They are beings of pure energy (magic). Dragons do not reside on the planets they protect, but in a dimension called Haven. Haven (in layman’s terms) is where all time and space converge i.e.; the source of all creation. Haven is allowed only to dragons, but some exceptions have occurred. Some species on the verge of extinction are brought to breed and reestablish their species until a time when they can be reintroduced to their world.

All dragons have the ability to change shape but from there their skills vary. Some dragons can see glimpses of the future, others can manipulate time and space while others can control the very elements of creation.

A dragon can only be die in four ways: death by another dragon, old age while in the shape of another species, killed by a weapon forged in magic (ie Sword of Sercles or Excalibur) or fading away into the universe when the creator deems there purpose over.

Dragons may only the protect the worlds they're assigned. They do not interfere with the ways of man or the species of the planet. To do so (in most cases) would be against the laws of the creator and punishable by either banishment from Haven or in extreme cases death. The exception being when directed by the Creator (Examples; Farnum and Luco warning the Stringen of their doom or Farnum hunting down Lucian)

A Dragon's main wish is to please the creator. This blinds them sometimes to what is the right thing to do for the many (i.e.; Letting the Darkness exist).

Once connected directly to the creator they have over time lost contact. The Dragons are now governed by the Elder Dragon council and led by the great Book of Laws and Prophecies. The Council is made up of Dragons typically a thousand years or older and led by a Dragon voted as Chancellor by his peers. The Chancellors job is to act as the swing vote in the thirteen Dragon High Council.

When time began there were 49 dragons, seven created to oversee each world of the creator. Over time these houses have been reduced to 36.If you are dragon in a particular family line you are known as a dragon of a particular house. No new houses have been created since the first appearance of the Dragons. As this is the history of Lorin below are the seven Houses that oversee Umar.

Note: As Dragons can visit multiple worlds several other houses have made their mark on the World of Lorin. Seven in particular came to an end at the hand of Stardor during the creation of the seven boxes

House of Farnum:
Most notable for dragons Farnum, Filem, and Gruffen. Historically the Farnum house has been the bravest and Wisest of the dragons. Spawning Five members of the elder council and two Chancellors (Farnum, the first Chancellor and Filem his son). The Farnum house has always spent a lot of time watching and guiding the human side of creation. Filem was well known for his generosity towards man. Over time their guidance has been bordered on interference and because of this the house of Farnum has found itself routinely at odd with various other houses.

House of Narguul:
Most notable for the dragons Kronos, Alazar, and Creed. Traditionally a very secretive family line, the Narguul have had their share of troublemakers. Since Kronos's father Naham betrayal of the Council, the Narguul line has believed that the Creator intended dragon's to rule and bring order to the chaos of the Universe. This belief was personified in the actions of Kronos and Alazar.

House of Owlen
Only one dragon makes up the House of Owlen and that is Owlen himself. The oldest of all Dragons, Owlen has the ability of site. He can see the shatterpoints in ones life and from their be able to see how someone will affect their world or in some cases die. HE is also the last of the Dragons to still speak with the creator. As such he sought by all dragons. After the second age he went into hiding and only occasionally makes an appearance at universe changing shatterpoints. His arrival is usually a bad omen.

House of Luco:
Most notable for Luco (The dragon that must not be honored) The Luco house no longer remains. It's only member was Luco father of the scourge Lucian. He brought dishonor to the dragons and his name was removed from their history.

House of Halphani:
Most notable for the dragons Halphani and Trudeau. Halphani the third Chancellor brought a renaissance to the dragon way of thinking it is because of him that. He was the last to speak to the creator (besides Owlen) and was instructed to lead the dragons to fight alongside the heroes of Umar and Hadon against Lucian and his armies in the first War of Darkness. Although Halphini's son Trudeau never became a member of the Elder Council, he's held in honor by most Elven people for the development of the Elven island of Gladshill. He was also known for building the Halls of Halphani , a great library, on the small Elven Island of Elsanora.

House of Dracani:
Most notable for the Dragons Azkas and Trion. The Dracani house has mostly been Dragons known for their inability to choose sides. In this it is ironic that they had two Chancellors in their bloodline. Both Azkas and Trion's legacy live on in infamy. Azkas allowed for the rise of Lucian by his indecision whether or not to break the laws and interfere. Only by a emergency vote was he pulled from office and replaced by Halphani. A century later his son Trion allowed for the Elven wars to continue nearly causing the destruction of all Elven life.

House of Crixus
A charismatic leader, Crixus, sacrificed himself to stop the plague of Velt that Sarthin loosed upon Umar. In his honor the great hall in Haven is named after him.

Born from the Stringen, Elves were first conceived to be an abominationand a hereditary defect like humans. However, after Sarthin’s death in the beginning of the First Age, Elves were seen as an evolved class of the Stringen people. Elves have extremely long lives some living more than 700 years. With high immune systems and a belief in clean living, Elves are extremely durable. Elves though can still fall to a mortal wound and are highly susceptible to environmental changes.

The first elves stayed close to their forefathers living amongst them and learned what they could. Unlike the Stringen though they focused most of their energy into magic. Eventually this split the Stringen and the Elves.

The Elves soon left Kilkar for other shores, eventually populating almost every continent. From these many lands the elves eventually evolved even more creating various species of Elves and eventually Dwarves, and Fafes.

After the first fall of Lucian there was a falling out between the Elves over of many things, mans place in the Elven world and what was to happen to those who joined with Lucian’s armies. This brought a bought the Elven wars which lasted a hundred years and only ended when a human of all people interceded.

Before the war as it is even now, the Elves are ruled by the Elven Council. Differing drastically from the Elder Dragon Council, The Elven Council is broken up into prieties (Elven for leaders of race). With Each Prie (leader) taking up one-Sixtieth of the council spots. The council though is not ruled by committee but by one Elf , which looks for the others for support in his decisions.

Towards the end of the "First Age" Elves created the island of Gladshill. This bcame their home. Non elves are not allowed to set foot on Gladshill unless summoned by the Elven Council. It is perceived as a great honor for a non-elf to even view Gladshill.

Species of Elf
Ellion: (eL-LIon}(High Elves) (later to become NightChildren)
Ellion were the first of the Elves. Born from the Stringen they held a collected memory that was past down upon birth. Extremely intelligent the Ellion were known for their immense use of logic. Most of the Elven Rulers were Ellion.

Viewed as being cold and callous even to their own kind it was no surprise when the Ellion joined up with Lucian. And because of their collective knowledge even evil was handed down and within two hundred years the Ellion were transformed into nights children.

The split over the treatment of the Ellion created the Elven Wars and in turn brought ruin to several of the Species of Elves.

Heren: {Hair-on}(Tree Elves)
Thought to be the weakest of the elves, the Heren were peace-loving elves that from their conception spent most of their times in the trees and woods. They became protectors of the wildlife and watchers of the woods. They were gifted in the ability to speak to both plant and animal.

It wasn’t until the Elven Wars did the Heren even learn to fight. But because of their short height and alarming speed they became stealthy assasins. After the war what was left of these quiet elves, put down their weapons and went back to healing the battle scarred woods.

It is from these simple Elves that one of the greatest Elves of all time rose, Landaloo Assantea

Galon: [Gal-on] (Snow Elves)
The Galon were known for two things their love for the cold and their utter contempt for humans. These Elves were also tallest of there kind. Standing on average of seven feet, the Galon could lift an object nearly ten times their weight. They were also lite walkers (ability to walk on both water and snow).

The Galon lived primarily in the Northern part of Umar as well as the Islands off the southern coast of Ravcliff. Later when the Ice age came, many moved back to Kilkar. Taking refuge in the mountains of Oron at the top of the world.

During the Elven War they sided with Nightschildren in an effort to destroy all human life. When they were doomed to fail their Elders blamed the dark magic as persuading them to kill their brethren. Never trusted again, the Snow Elves never find a spot on the Elven Council and forever banned from Gladshill.

Lowed: [LO-ed](WarClass Elves)
The Loweds were raised from birth to be warriors. Even their youngest were taught tactics. Most of the Lowed were protectors of the Elven Kingdoms. Even with their unique strength and skill, a Lowed never quested for power. Thus were held as the noblest of the Elves. It was the Loweds that were the first to help in the battle against Lucian and were the first to colonize what is now Nordsland.

During the Elven wars the Lowed; fiercest of all Elves stayed away from the fighting, not wanting to dishonor themselves with the infighting. After the war they were the first to help repair the damages done to the other tribes.

The Lowed though were nearly wiped out during the time of Chronos the Dragon's reign of terror. After Chronos' destruction, Most Lowed left for either Gladshill or far distant lands like Welden or Jodar. A few stayed behind and joined with other tribes becoming peacekeepers instead of warriors. Now their tribe is almost non-existent and no longer part of the tribal Council.

Most famouse was Tebo Bobbick caretaker of Calista Drax aka the Red.

Quen: [CAIN]( Animal Protectors)
Strict Vegans, The Quen were known as animal protectors. Not known for the abilty to really speak to the animals but instead read their emotions. With this useless gift the Quen were looked down upon by every Elf but the Heren.

The Quen shut themselves away from all others and when their lands became over run by other types of creatures the Quen took to boats.

Some believe it is the Quen themselves that evolved into Merfolk, since their disappearance well before Elven war in the Third Age. However, a few Quen

Lasion [LA-SHun](Philosopher elves)
If any elf were good in magic it would be the Lasion. They were known as philosopher elves. They are also the closest in looks to a human and in a quick glance could pass as one. Lasion's were born in magic and believed (as did the Dragons) in the one creator. Because the elves believe in six gods this was looked down upon. But the Lasions were never persecuted, for most elves feared their magical abilities.

The Lasions were also known for their ability to heal others. This made them useful to both sides during first " The first Rise of Lucian" as well the Elven Wars.

The Lasions, due to their similarities to humans, breeded regularly with them. It seems that in the end this caused the near extinction of the Lasions for after "The Fall of Lucian” only a handful of pure-bloods remained.

One of the most famous Lasion was Illia Fassonti aka Illian Chan, mother of Mike and Catrina Chan.

Josiah (JO-shA) (artisans and Craftsmen)
Josiahs are some of the best craftsmen in the world. They are naturally gifted in the arts and are excellent blacksmiths. Josiahs are used to build ships, buildings, weapons and more within Gladshill. Because of their skills they are some of the richest of all elves. This makes them a very powerful Piet in the Elven council. The Josiah are said to have manipulated the Elven Wars in order to make more money from weapons and armor.

Outside of Gladshill the Josiah have a natural rivalry with Dwarves. Even though they need the Dwarves to deliver the metal and jewels they need for their crafting they have a great disdain for the weapons and armor made by the Stringen.

Stringen (Strin- jen)
The children of the creator, the Stringen were the first amongst all races. They were blessed with creators love and were granted long lives. Stringen also could share memories from birth, handing down their knowledge to their children. They not only populated the land of Kilkar but also used their knowledge to improve their lives.

They used magic and science to build large buildings of stone and glass. But all of this knowledge wasn't enough. They became greedy and started to create creatures to do their bidding. They built the Razul (half-bird/ half-man) to patrol the skies. Ogres to protect their most valued treasures. Trolls to fight the Dwarves and the Velt (a creature/weapon used to nearly wipe out the people of Umar)

Not liking the path that the Stringen were on, the creator sent the Dragons to talk sense into them. The Stringen refused to listen and continued their experiments, yet they were witness to the Dragons' powers and were fearful. They attempted to create dragons of their own. Each experiment while failing introduced a new species into the world of Lorin. From these experiments came the Grejin, Wyverns and Wyrms. Things rapidly moved forward when the brothers Stardor and Sercles used their knowledge of science and skills in magic to create weapons that could destroy and capture the magic of dragons. The brother's picked different ways to solve the Dragon problem. Sercles designed weapons that could be imbued with enough magic to destroy any creature in their way. Stardor however wanted to capture the very powers that the Dragons had inside of them, the powers of creation. Stardor created the seven boxes and, while using one of Sercles weapons, is able to kill and capture the energy from the dragons. Although meant as a weapon the boxes at first allow travel to the other worlds of the Creator one box for each world.

Stardor’s actions cause a falling out with his brother Sercles and Sercles leaves Kilkar behind. Sercles goes on to make the armor of Sercles to balance out the weapons he had created. In Kilkar, the dragons provide one last warning to the Stringen. Turn over Stardor and the Boxes or Kilkar will be destroyed along with any Stringen living their. The Stringen do not comply starting a chain of weather and geographical events that shift Lorin’s axis and over the course of a hundred years Ravcliffe becomes the northern most continent. Kilkar becomes covered in ice and snow. Rough seas prevent ships from leaving, Freezing winds prevents even the one sympathetic dragon, Luco, from saving Stringen. In less than a hundred and fifty years, Kilkar is destroyed and over 20 million Stringen are destroyed. Stardor hoever was able to escape as well as some of the best and brightest of Stringen leadership. Those leaders escaped to earth and settled the the island nation of Atlantis. Close to a million other Stringen survived Kilkar by fleeing to safety on other continents.

When Luco’s son Lucian, half-Stringen/ half-Dragon, takes the throne of Ravcliffe (the most powerful of all Kingdoms) the Stringen think that hop had returned to their people. However, after hearing a prophecy about how a Stringen will cause his death, he puts a price on the head of every Stringen. The Stringen live in fear and many are caught up in the culling. Still more than eight-hundred thousand still survice in hiding. Desperate to destroy the Stringen, Luco has his dark prophets create a virus that targets Stringen pure bloods called the Red Virus. The Red Virus is a painful virus that draws blood through the skin and causes the victim to bleed out. The virus wipes out nearly 90% of the remaining Stringen.

On the verge of extinction the remaining Stringen went into hiding. Some left for Weldon while most moved into the swamps between Greatland and Crixten or the Valley of Dragons in the North above Nordsland. As the Stringen can typically have no more than 4 children in their lifetime there numbers are still small.

The Humans were evolved from the Stringen. When the race first started they were born opposite of Elves. Where the Elves were gifted in magic the humans were not. Humans were deemed inferior to both races. So much so that upon birth the Stringen would separated humans from their Stringen parents just so that the human would not taint the others. Eventually the humans left Kilkar and spread their lines through out the world. Over the twenty-two Centuries of Stringen existence the humans developed a cultures

all their own. Because of their rapid breeding and short life spans (on average in the early ages 64 years) humans became the most populated race on Lorin.

Humans though were known for their greed of money, power and knowledge. They soon outcast themselves from other races especially the Stringen and the Elves. Only with great leadership are the humans known to rise above their station.

Humans differ based on location, the most well known are the Nordslandic people upper Umar. Closer to the Stringen these people populate Lorin history due to their proximity to Kilkar and their belief, like the dragons, in the one Creator.

The most disliked among humans are the Donatu Tribes of Eastern Ravcliff, which worship the moon god and are cannibalistic. It is through them that Lucian created the despised Torric (see Torrics).

Over time though it is humans that develop Lorin even after the Elves leave the shores of the Six Continents to reside on Gladshill

Created originally by Lucian from the Donatu Tribes of Eastern Ravcliff, the Torrics were creatures that would not breed like other species but by creating others through necromancing (the darkest of magic ). Torrics were efficient killing machines, they would slaughter whole towns than reap the body parts to repair themselves and or create new Torrics. The only known way to destroy a Torric is to destroy their high priest (usually with fire), breaking the Necromantic spell. Only Dragons and the Lasion Elves had the ability to destroy them through magic.

As powerful as they were the Torrics had a few things against them. They lacked any intelligence above that of an insect, making strategy out of the question. Also Torrics smelled extremely bad and looked like the walking dead. (It is an insult to be said to look or smell like a Torric)

In order to lead the Torric one has to be fluent in the dark magics and have a weak sense of smell.

Created by the Stringen Emperor Sarthin by splicing the essence of an Elf and Dwark, Trolls were bred to combat Dwarves far below the surface of the earth. However, as they eveolved, different races of trolls emerged and Trolls began to have their own subcultures. = Trolls though do populate a large amount of the lands of Umar, Wheldon and Hadon. Like Dwarves more so than Elves, trolls are more built around their chosen environment. Although one thing all trolls have in common is a natural disdain for bright light. In some cases Sunlight can turn certain Trolls into stone.

It is well documented though that trolls are usually fierce and unintelligent. There are some exceptions of course seeing that Trolls can be educated. Some Trolls have even achieved a high place in social circles (i.e. Atol and his father Darnoc).

Mountain Trolls
Given their name for their love of the tunnels and caverns of Mountain ranges. Mountain trolls were strong and stood on average of six feet (though mostly hunched). They could lift five times their weight and release claw like fingernails that would grow to the length of four inches.

Mountain trolls place in history was secured by there frequent battles with the dwarves. Most of the time a mountain troll found his home in former mining tunnels of the neighboring dwarves. Dwarves being territorial were known to take offense. Mountain Trolls to were territorial and would usually only deal with others outside their own if provoked. Not known for joining in wars outside of the mountains.

Despite their quest for peaceful existence, mountain trolls would kill anything and anyone that happened into their homes.

Known for the famous Mountain Trolls Darnoc and his son Atol.

Bridge Trolls
Bridge trolls most of the time hid from sunlight by building small homes beneath local bridges. These trolls were usually small but were extremely annoying. To pay for their food they would frequently charge a toll to cross a bridge or if a child wandered over on his/her own they would capture him/her and get a ransom.

In some communities these trolls were deemed outlaws and were treated very poorly. Though no troll in history ever ate a child or failed to give him/her back when payment was given.

Other Trolls
There are over twenty other classes of trolls ranging from the warrior tribes of Central Welden to the herders of Lower Hadon. Most trolls though kept to themselves thus history never really illuminated their adventures.

Gargons were another of the first races. Not blessed with magic or knowledge the Gargons were a nomadic people. On average a height of four feet and having four arms. Gargons were known for their building skills and quaint architecture. In the times of the Stringen, Gargons resided mainly on the large continent of Ravcliff. They were peace-loving people not trained in war, most became philosophers and monks.

They believed in the Animal gods and preached of better times to come. They would also frequently help other species no matter what their beliefs to achieve their personal goals.

Because of their beliefs the Gargons were frequently persecuted by the Razul and the Stringen. Others, for example humans, took advantage of the Gargons using them to build their cities and tend their crops. Only the Elves and dragons cared for them.

During the Ice Age it was the Gargons, normally a water fearing race, who were the first to boats trying to save the Stringen.

In the end it was their faith that became their undoing. A large group agreed to help Lucian achieve his goal. Building his war machines and helping with the creation of the Torrin.

To this day though some Gargons still exist and wander Lorin preaching of better times yet to come.

Fafes (known as fairies on Earth)
Born from the Elves not through breeding but through the existence of magic. When an elf dies there thoughts, dreams, and being becomes Fafes. Fafes are more of an extension of an Elf than the Elf themselves. But based on the life the elf lived is how the Fafe will react.

Some Fafes are mischievous doing things like moving household belongings on unsuspecting people. Other Fafes help out Elves and other species.

Fafes like their fairy counterparts exist until someone stops believing in them. In a magic world like Lorin some Fafes live for thousands of years building vast hidden kingdoms of their own.

Fafes are also not confined to one world in a whim they can jump through dimensions to other worlds. Most Fafes though prefer Lorin and the lands of Jodar.

There are many species of Weres over the world of Lorin. Commonly known as half-breeds, Weres are usually a combination of two different species. Most Weres are believed to have originated from a curse. Is is believed that certain elves when crossed would curse others into taking on traits of other species. The species of Weres are spread usually in the exchange of bodily fluids. The most common species of Weres are the Werewolf or Weredog. But the curses also created all types of Weres including Werebirds or Werepigs. The former is the worst, because once in this state it is difficult to communicate in a understandable language and was quite common to be eaten by your friends.

Being a Were doesn't necessarily make one evil. It is a common misconception that Weres are bad, most Weres continue their non-changed beliefs. Some Weres can even be quite helpful, i.e.. Jus Planko, a 12 yr. old girl who befriends Lou Ann and joins Nordslands Junior guard. Even though she changes into a Kilk tiger when angry she can control her actions very well.

Much like Fafes, Hellfuries are the remains of elves. But these elves were not typical elves. Elves that became bad or joined the Darkness typically became Hellfurries. These little creatures are primarily in the service of Dark wizards or Prophets of the Darkness.

Hellfurries are a little larger then your common Fafe and are known to be able to reach human size for a limited time. But while Fafes travel in a glow of light, Hellfurries ( Furries for short) travel in darker colors.

Much like mischeviouse Faries, Hellfurries also don't play nice. Hellfurries are known for their ability to kill and mame, mostly for their

Dark masters. Some Furries are known to lead small children off cliffs to fly down the throat of those who don't suspect them.

The main way to stop a Hellfurrie is through Elven magic, i.e. a charm or quick spell. The quickest way to stop a Hellfurrie is laughter. A loud laugh is known to make Hellfurries explode.

Probably the fiercest of all dwellers of Lorin, the Razuls are as mercenary as they come. Bred by the Stringen to be protectors of their kingdoms, Razuls quickly became unrelenting fighters. They were created to be immune to magic to allow them to fight elves and even dragons if need be. Even under control by Stringen Commanders no Razul was allowed to create a flock of his own in fear of what these eight-foot tall winged warriors would do.

Eventually, Razuls rebelled against their masters and separated from the Stringen. Because Razuls breed faster (once a season) and can lay up to five eggs per female they became a threat to the Stringen.

Most of the Stringen late weapons were created to stop a Razul invasion. In the end the Stringen were wiped out by the cold, but some believe the Razuls picked off any survivors who tried to escape Kilkar.

After the fall of the Stringen, Razuls laid claim to much of the upper portion of Ravcliff. They created high Aeries (some as tall as Earthen skyscrapers) to house their flocks. There they trained from childhood to be warriors and mercenaries.

During the time of Lucian, Razuls increased their size of flocks (flock- 1 Bull male, his wives and spawn) from roughly twenty to a hundred or more. They built their own weapons and light weight armor to protect them in flight.

Only because of Lucian’s cunning was he able to unite the flocks to stand by his side at the Battle of Guile, winning the most important battle of his campaign against the united tribes of Ravcliff. It was at the Battle of Guile that Razuls earned the reputation of leaving no survivors.

After the fall of Lucian, the surviving Flocks of Razul separated and returned to their Aeries forced to return to a mercenary role. To provide for their own it was not uncommon for Razuls to work for opposite side in a battle. But Razuls are well known to switch side to whoever can pay them the best. This was never more evident than their many disputes with the Dwarves (see Dwarves).

Genetically manipulated by the Stringen, Ogres were bred like vicious guard dogs. The process went badly for the Stringen when they learned that these creatures could not be tamed. They tried using their newest creations the Razul to hunt them down, but Ogres are known for their fierceness in combat and slaughtered most of the Razul that were sent after them.

Ogres eventually broke into their own clans and split over the continent of Welden. They became a dominant species on that land hunting down whatever they could for food including nomadic groups of humans. Their clan on clan fighting though nearly destroyed their species and allowed the humans in Welden to unite and form well protected kingdoms.

Lucian used a clan of Ogres in his final battle against Coran's armies. The Ogres their sacrificied themselves but killed all they came in contact with. Ogres can be found mostly in bogs and swamps.

Born of Angelic blood, Giants can be anywhere from twelve feet to seventeen feet tall. Thick skinned and strong, few face a giant in one on one combat and survives. While Giants have angelic blood that also elongates their life, there are few “good” giants. Due to the amount of food they need to eat daily, most giants are greedy and bullish. Giants are also extremely hairy and usually have long bushy beards thatmake seeing their eyes difficult.

One time pets to the rich of Kilkar Gargoyles were used as guard dogs to the wealthy. Gargoyles are typically small (around five foot) With batlike wings and sharp talons, Gargoyles are quick efficient killers. Gargoyles natural enemy are the Razul and, as such, stay clear of Northern Ravcliffe. In Umar, Gargoyles can be found in the Belkon Desert and the rocky grags of Crixten

These lizard like creatures believe in scaring their bodies to show rank. Created by the Stringen to be soldiers, Grejin can be found on each of the continents. While colors and scars maybe different, Grejin share razoe sharp teeth and talons. Their heads are velociraptor like and they use their tails to balance their bodies. The Grejin tribal leaders are typically the largest most scarred of the Grejin.
